As the Merrie Monarch Festival lights up Hilo with the beauty of hula, I can’t help but feel deep pride in where I come from. Growing up on a farm in Kamuela, Hawai‘i, I was surrounded by the richness of our land, pride in our culture, the importance of hard work and dedication, and the stories passed down through generations.
Watching the keiki take the stage—so full of passion, grace, and pride—brings me so much joy. They are the next generation, carrying forward a tradition that’s more than dance… it’s emotion, identity, and the spirit of aloha in motion. Hula connects us to our ancestors, our land, and each other in the most powerful way. It brings so much emotion, and experiencing hula first hand is truly breathtaking.
As a local realtor, I have the privilege of helping people find their place here in Hawai‘i—homes where their own stories can begin. But Hawai‘i is more than just a place to live. It's a place to feel, to grow, and to belong. And events like Merrie Monarch remind us why our roots run so deep.
To all the dancers, kumu, and ohana sharing their art with the world this week—mahalo for keeping our culture alive. Your hula speaks volumes.
